Moringa has officially launched its free Artificial Intelligence (AI) upskilling initiative, set to equip 3,600 Kenyan youth with practical, future-ready skills by December 2026. This nationwide programme will ensure that our young professionals in software engineering, education, healthcare, and other targeted professions have the skills needed for the jobs of the future.
Funded as part of a $2 million Google grant and in partnership with WeThinkCode from South Africa, the initiative is part of a continent-wide effort to train 12,000 learners across Kenya and South Africa in AI competencies. Moringa is leading the Kenyan rollout – leveraging its extensive alumni network, grassroots partnerships, and regional expertise to ensure inclusive access to this high-demand skill set. Leveraging Moringa’s strengths in software engineering, the program begins with upskilling young software engineers and will later expand to other professional areas such as education and healthcare.
“This initiative is not just about tech, it’s about economic mobility,” said Nikki Germany, CEO of Moringa. “We’re unlocking opportunities for thousands of Kenyans to participate meaningfully in the AI-driven economy, not as passive consumers, but as active innovators.”
Why It Matters Now
The launch comes at a critical moment, as AI begins to reshape entire industries, from healthcare and education to logistics and creative media. Yet access to AI skills training remains highly concentrated in the Global North, limiting Africa’s participation in shaping the technology’s future. The programme aims to change that, offering practical, human-centred training designed for real-world impact.
Nationwide Recruitment Underway
To ensure diverse participation, Moringa is spearheading a nationwide recruitment drive targeting women, underrepresented communities, and professionals nationwide. Partnerships with various tech hubs, universities, and industry leaders, whilst driving awareness and enrollment.
“We believe Kenya can lead the continent in responsible AI adoption,” Nikki added. “This programme is how we prepare our workforce—not just for jobs of the future, but for leadership in the technologies shaping that future.”
As the program scales, Moringa remains committed to building a future where Kenyan talent is not only ready for AI-driven transformation but actively shaping it. By equipping youth with globally relevant skills and fostering local innovation, this initiative stands as a bold step toward inclusive economic growth, digital sovereignty, and long-term national resilience in the face of rapidly evolving technologies.
